FLOWN Gemini 4 flag
This 8x12 American flag was flown on the Gemini IV flight. Rare is anything flown on Gemini flights, as conditions were extremely cramped, with little room for anything but essential flight items. This flag had to be ironed out, as it was a crumpled ball that McDivitt stuffed into a spacesuit pocket.
This flag is signed by Jim McDivitt, and is nearly 50 years old. Only the second manned Gemini flight, the all-rookie crew were Air Force chums James McDivitt, mission commander and Edward White who would do the first American EVA. The spacewalk was added only a few weeks before, due to Alexei Leonov's harrowing but successful walk in March for the USSR. Hardware, a special EVA spacesuit, and procedures were already developed--but for a later flight. Gemini IV's iconic first spacewalk lasted 20 leisurely, uncramped minutes, when Ed White, protesting "The saddest moment of my life" was ordered back in. McDivitt won a Pulitzer prize for his photography. The capsule is on display at the National Air and Space Museum.
