FLOWN IN SPACE
The Ultimate Space CollectiblesThese are the ultimate collectibles, logging one to 3 million miles in space over 40 years ago. The ideal memento of the 20th century, from one of the crowning achievements of mankind. These items are obtained directly from the Apollo astronauts themselves, and are also authenticated by the astronauts. It doesn't get any better than that. There is a finite number of these items, as weight constraints allowed only a few personal mementos to fly with the Apollo crews. Many of the items are personal, and meant for NASA ground crews, family and personal friends of the astronauts. |
All items subject to prior sale and volatile pricing. There is a distinction and hierarchy to these items. There are items that are flown (in Earth orbit) "flown to the moon" meaning they flew in the command module, to and from the moon. Others are "flown to the surface" These items are VERY rare, as the LM had tight weight constraints. These are more costly. Rarest of all are tools, garments, maps, etc., which were used during the lunar explorations on the surface. These are EVA-used artifacts. Crew-issued, numbered and manifested artifacts are most desirable, as they are supplies needed and used for the lunar voyage. Astronauts were allowed to bring a PPK (Personal Preference Kit) of up to five pounds of personal items and souvenirs to be stowed in the Command Module. In addition, the moonwalkers were allowed a smaller PPK for lunar surface items. These remained aboard the Lunar Module. Efforts to ascertain "how many" of what was flown are futile. The contents are known only to the astronauts. The Apollo astronauts were careful to separate and/or sign their PPK items shortly after the flight. In addition , some manifested artifacts were retained by crew members if not claimed by the Smithsonian, or were to be left on the lunar surface or aboard the LM and not returned to earth. |
MORE flown items appear on our ASTRO-AUCTION
in the "astronaut garage sales" or "flown items" categories.
