STS-1 CREW-SIGNED LAUNCH PHOTO
8x10 photo of the first space shuttle launch. Signed by John Young & Bob Crippen, the crew of the maiden voyage of the space shuttle (Columbia) in April 1981. The shuttle had only been component-tested on Earth, and this was the first time the whole system was tested from liftoff to landing. COA.
It looked like the launch of the Taj Mahal. The first two launches used a white (painted) external tank. NASA learned that unpainted (tan) tanks allowed 600 more pounds of payload. This was the first "all up" test of the system. Crewed by NASA's most experienced pilot, and a boyish rookie (that had been an astronaut for a cancelled Air Force project since the mid-1960s.) Launch and landing went perfectly.
