This popular view of Apollo 8 rounding the moon and seeing the Earth was seen extensively during the 40th anniversary of Apollo 8 in December, 2008.
A critical rocket firing occurred behind the moon, and it was at this moment the the ground that the Christmas Eve flight was headed home. Jim Lovell remarked "Houston, be advised that there IS a Santa Claus"
