MICHAEL COLLINS

Corkscrew Swamp Boardwalk
by Michael Collins
Visiting one of his favorite nearby spots in southwest Florida, Collins paints this view of the boardwalk through the lush, cypress swamp in the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Collins, pilot for Apollo 11, the first moon landing mission with crewmates Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Collins orbited the moon in the CM "ride home" while Neil and Buzz went to the surface.
Collins is happily retired after a stellar career as test pilot, astronaut, diplomat, author and first director of the National Air & Space Museum. He now fishes, paints and explores the wilderness around his South Florida home. This is one of those sublimely serene scenes he's witnessed. Collins signs "Michael Collins" in lower right.
