The X-15 ROCKET PLANE
by Michelle Evans
Michelle Evans has written the definitive book on the popular X-15, which was a precursor and a test bed for the space shuttle, and it had many heroic pilots, including Neil Armstrong and Joe Engle.
Joe Engle flew the X-15 sixteen times, including three flights into space, and reached a maximum speed of Mach 5.71 and a maximum altitude of 280,600 feet. This experience later served him very well when he flew the unpowered Space Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise during Approach and Landing Tests, and then commanded two shuttle missions, STS-2 and STS-51I.
